Punchbowl Falls, Angel’s Rest

August 16, 2017 Leave a comment

The Columbia Gorge is not only scenic, it has some great hikes.   We were glad to be back and have some nice weather to do two different hikes.  First we did Punchbowl Falls, 2 1/2 mile in on Eagle Creek.  This hike isn’t too strenuous, although there are some scary drop offs to watch for.  The Falls are gorgeous.

Our second hike was up to Angel’s Rest.  This is the only hike we do that is rated “Hard”, not because of the length (total distance maybe 5 1/2 miles) but it is steep, rocky, and high.  Elevation gain is some 1,500 feet, tough n old folks like us!  But the view is absolutely superb.  See the second set of pictures.

Portland: roses and food trucks

July 3, 2013 2 comments

Portland is known as “City of Roses”, but it is also a leader in food trucks.  So we took a little drive and visited both.

The roses are grown in a huge garden, known as “Test Garden”.  A large variety of roses are grown, in all colors and sizes.  Every year, a Rose Champion is crowned, and are planted in the Garden of Champions.  Y0u can find roses growing with roots back to the 1940’s and before.   A nice place to visit, even if you aren’t a rose enthusiast.

Portland has food trucks scattered throughout the city.  But right downtown are several enclaves of food trucks, giving you a huge choice of ethnic foods.  You can find most nationalities represented.  It’s fun just to walk around and make the (difficult) selection of the food you want to eat.  And, it’s very tasty and cheap.

Portland’s food carts

Portland (OR) is known for their food carts.  Here, people have an assigned space and put up a fast food cart.  Almost all are ethnic, so you have all kinds of foods… Mexican, Indian, Czech, Thai and so on.  We decided to check them out.

We found a “pod” of food carts, parked the car, and had some very good lunch.  We found that the food was indeed excellent, and cheap, too!  And very popular.  At lunch time, people streamed out of their offices (hey, it was a sunny day, too!) and ate on the street.

We left satisfied on learning something new.  As we drove away, we found several more pods, in fact, the one we were at is one of the smaller ones!  At my estimate, there has to be some 100 carts in Portland, and all vying for the top rating.

Decisions, decisions...

Maybe some Thai food?

We ate at this one because it had high reviews

So we had Pad Thai and Tom Kah soup, total $11 for lunch for both of us.  It was some of the best Pad Thai I’ve had, but I’m gonna have to go back for the Polish sausage….

Portland, city of roses

June 18, 2011 2 comments

Portland is known as “Rose City”, and they have a very beautiful rose garden open to the public.  We had a rare sunny day so Romola and I went for a visit.

The spring weather has been very bad, and rose growth is behind schedule.  Also, there is some damage to the more delicate petals.  Nevertheless, there were enough roses for me to fully utilize my new digital camera.  I managed to select some, shown in the album below.

Note also the image which shows some of downtown and Mt. Hood in the background.  Beautiful place, Portland.
